The power of a pause

Breathing is not only one of the most powerful tools we have, it’s also something we do every day without thinking about it. Breathing is unique because it operates both automatically and under conscious control. Yet, at any moment, we can choose to slow it down, deepen it, and use it to influence how we respond to the world around us. When we feel stressed or threatened, our brain prepares us to react, our heart rate increases, our breathing becomes shallower, and our attention narrows. This response has served humanity well throughout evolution, but it is not always helpful in a modern workplace.

I think a deliberate pause followed by a slow, conscious breath, creates space between stimulus and response. It helps regulate our emotional state and allows the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain responsible for reasoning, judgment, and self-control) to play a greater role in our decision-making. In leadership, that pause can make all the difference because instead of reacting impulsively, we gain the opportunity to respond intentionally. We can question our assumptions, choose our words more carefully, and act in a way that reflects our values rather than our immediate emotions. If you want to take this a step further, develop a regular mindfulness or meditation practice. Like any leadership capability, self-awareness strengthens with consistent practice, and sometimes the most important decision you make begins with a single breath.
